Early Pregnancy Scan

An Early Pregnancy Scan is typically carried out between weeks 6 and 14 of pregnancy. For those who don’t know exactly how far along in their pregnancy they are, the measurements performed by our sonographers during this scan are typically very accurate for establishing gestational age.

Gender Scan

What Is Included The Early Pregnancy Scan?

  • 15 minute appointment
  • Check Baby’s heartbeat
  • Check for twins or multiples
  • Obstetric report and images transferred electronically to email or phone
  • One adult guest is welcome to attend the scan with you
  • A short 2D visual clip of baby’s heart beating

2D scans are performed externally using a scan probe on the abdomen. Up to 11 weeks these scans are typically performed in order to determine:

  • The presence of a foetal heartbeat
  • If it is a single or multiple pregnancy
  • Provide measurements and an estimated delivery date

Between 6 and 11 weeks we are still able to provide measurements and reassurance, but the most accurate time to date a pregnancy is between 11 and 14 weeks.

Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice

Please provide our office with 24-hour notice to change or cancel an appointment. If you do not attend a scheduled appointment or do not provide 24-hour notice to change a scheduled appointment you may be responsible for the full amount of the appointment cost or a €50.00 service charge. This charge must be paid on or before the next scheduled appointment.

A 24-hour notice allows us to offer that time to another person.

Frequently asked questions
  • Do I need a doctors referral letter for a scan?

You do not need a doctor’s referral letter for our obstetric scans. You will need a referral for any gynae or fertility scans.

  • Can you tell the sex of the baby?

We do require baby between 18 and 34 weeks for gender scans. Depending on baby´s position, we are happy to give our opinion as to what sex the baby is. However, ultrasound sexing of baby is not always 100 percent accurate, due to the position of baby, fluid levels, and mother’s BMI (body mass index). The sonographer will give you her or his best assessment. As with any scan in your own hospital, there is always a chance that you may accidentally see the sex of baby, we will do our best to ensure that you do not see it by chance if a surprise is wanted. There are instances when foetal position may not allow proper visualisation to adequately make that determination. When this happens you will be invited back free of charge for a limited gender check.

  • Is it safe?

Ultrasound has been used in obstetrics for over 50 years. Despite many trials and studies it has not been proven to cause any harm to either baby or mother. The safety of ultrasound is constantly evaluated by the British Medical Ultrasound Society. The 4D scan uses the same ultrasound output levels as the ordinary 2D hospital scan. The machine uses sophisticated methods to transform the 2D image into a 3D/4D image. There is increasing evidence that seeing your baby on ultrasound increases the bond between mother, father and baby. Please note that the 3d/4d scan uses the same sound frequency as a normal 2d black and white scan.
